Afloat in the ocean, expanding islands of trash. (11/9/2009, New York Times) Light bulbs, bottle caps, toothbrushes and tiny pieces of plastic inhabit the Pacific garbage patch, an area that doubles in size every decade and is now believed to be roughly twice the size of Texas. Scientists say it is just one of five that may be caught in giant gyres in the world’s oceans.
