Facilities & Operations
School facilities include the site itself, all buildings and structures, and the paved, natural or landscaped grounds. The design and operation of these facilities impact:
- Learning opportunities
- Human health and performance
- Resource use
- Indoor and outdoor environmental quality
The K-12 school system includes an infrastructure massive enough to house over 20% of our total population at any given time. That means it is large enough to have a considerable sustainability impact, to the community, the environment and the economy.
This category involves multiple interrelated topics that are often approached in isolation by separate groups of people. It is presented here within the following 3 topic headers, but note that there is a great deal of crossover.
Key aspects of “Facilities and Operations” are also contained within the Resource Management topic. This includes such elements as energy needs and use, materials selection and end-of-use management and water management and use.
